Great Scott: No. 3/5 Softball sails into semifinals of SEC Tournament with walk-off double
05.08.2025 | Softball
Mia Scott drives in Ashton Maloney in the bottom of the seventh for 46th win on season
ATHENS, Ga. – The third matchup of Thursday's quarterfinal round of the 2025 SEC Softball Tournament began with Texas scoring a first inning run and ended with the Longhorns scoring a seventh inning run as the first-year conference member earned a 7-6 victory over Ole Miss to advance to the tournament's semifinals on Friday afternoon.
Reese Atwood, Katie Stewart and Joley Mitchell all produced run-scoring plate appearances during the bottom of the first that saw the Texas offense send nine to the plate and take a 4-0 lead courtesy of three walks and three base hits.
The four-run lead stood until the top of the fourth, when Ole Miss (37-17) plated a single run.
The Longhorns responded with a pair in the bottom half of the frame as a result of a two-run home run off the bat of Kayden Henry. But Ole Miss answered right back with five runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game.
Once out of the fifth, Citlaly Gutierrez (10-1) threw 11 pitches to retire six consecutive Rebel batters during the sixth and seventh innings.
Gutierrez keeping Ole Miss out of the run column allowed Texas opportunities to re-take the lead.
And it took a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh to make it happen.
With two outs, Ashton Maloney sent the first pitch of her two-out at bat back up the middle for an infield single. A defensive miscue by Ole Miss' second baseman on a grounder by Kayden Henry kept the inning alive for Mia Scott.
Scott, with a 3-2 count after fouling off the fifth pitch of her plate appearance, send the sixth pitch well over the Rebel's centerfield for a game-ending double that scored Maloney from second.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"First of all, I want to thank Georgia for hosting the tournament. I know there's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, the preparation, and too many people to thank. There's a decent crowd today. You know, the Ole Miss game today was an incredible level of emotions. Definitely a roller coaster. You're up and you think you have got everything in hand and then they keep fighting and keep fighting and you've got to tip your hat to them. They played tremendously well, especially in the field with some late plays there. But our team, you know, just had a good fight and come back to be able to take advantage of the situation."
FROM SOPHOMORE KAYDEN HENRY
"You get punched in the mouth, and it is adversity at that point, but it's being able to make those adjustments, trust each other and making sure to do what we can on the field and at the point to be able to push through and get the win that we need."
