Left-handed pitcher is lone freshman slotted on first team
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas standout Dylan Volantis earned his third All-America honor, Baseball America announced on Friday.
Volantis — who was also named an NCBWA and ABCA/Rawlings All-American — is the lone freshman to be listed on the first team.
A Thousand Oaks, Calif., native, Volantis burst onto the college baseball scene in his debut campaign on The Forty Acres, earning Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year recognition.
In league play, Volantis led all pitchers in ERA (1.59), WHIP (0.85), B/AVG (.160) and saves (11).
The 6-foot-6, 212-pound southpaw's 11 saves in conference action are the most by an SEC freshman ever, breaking a 22-year-old record held by Ole Miss' Steven Head.
Overall, Volantis notched a 4-1 mark and a 1.94 ERA across 51 innings, registering 12 walks and 74 strikeouts.
As of June 20, the NCBWA Freshman Pitcher of the Year is tied for 10th nationally in saves (12).
