OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – It's a moment that will forever be etched into the fabric of the Texas softball program's history:
A 1-0 count.
Teagan Kavan's 111th pitch of the night.
Texas leading by five runs in the top of the seventh.
A ground ball to Leighann Goode at shortstop.
Goode, a natural second baseman – filling in at shortstop due to an injury to Viviana Martinez – dropped to a knee, made a backhand stop and unleashed a rocket to first base that beat Texas Tech's Lauren Allred by four steps.
For the first time in the program's 28-year history, the Texas Longhorn softball program earned a national championship after polishing off the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 10-4, in Game 3 of the 2025 Women's College World Series Championship Series.
Texas wasted no time getting to Texas Tech starting pitcher NiJaree Canady as the Longhorns scattered five runs and capitalized on a Red Raider error to take a 5-0 lead that was highlighted with a two-out, three-run home run off the bat of Leighann Goode.
The lead was extended in the third after Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart hit back-to-back doubles to extend the advantage out to six runs. The following inning, Mia Scott put the exclamation point on the Longhorns' first-ever national championship with a grand slam to score Kaydee Bennett, Ashton Maloney and Kayden Henry and give Texas a 10-0 lead before any of the 12,269 fans in attendance could blink.
Texas Tech, however, responded with a three-spot in the top of the fifth to keep the game alive and avoid the eight-run mercy run, The Red Raiders went on to add a fourth run in the top of the seventh, but Kavan eventually capped the contest with the ground ball to Goode.
This marked the second team national championship for The University of Texas during the 2024-25 academic year, as Men's Swimming and Diving won the national title in late March. Texas now owns 68 all-time National Championships, including 64 NCAA crowns.
Texas has now won multiple National Championships in each of the last five seasons. During the last five years, the Longhorns have won a total of 13 NCAA team titles by eight different programs. Excluding the COVID-shortened year of 2019-20, Texas has won at least one NCAA Championship in 10-straight seasons.
The University of Texas sponsors 21 intercollegiate sports. With Softball earning its first NCAA Championship, 15 of those 21 programs have claimed a National Championship.
