Manning becomes fifth Texas quarterback to throw at least four touchdown passes in first half of a game in last 30 years
AUSTIN, Texas - Quarterback Arch Manning passed for 295 yards and accounted for five touchdowns, as No. 7/6 Texas prevailed 38-7 over San José State in front of 100,841 fans on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Longhorns (1-1) scored on four of their first six possessions, with all four touchdowns coming over a 4:56 span beginning at the 2:52 mark in the first quarter.
Manning became the fifth Texas quarterback to throw at least four touchdown passes in the first half of a game in the last 30 years, joining Vince Young (Nov. 12, 2005), Sam Ehlinger (Sept. 12, 2020), Casey Thompson (Oct. 9, 2021) and Quinn Ewers (Dec. 2, 2023 & Nov. 9, 2024)
On their third drive of the game, Manning connected with wide receiver Parker Livingstone on an 83-yard catch and run. The opening score marked the longest passing play for the Longhorns since a 90-yard reception on Oct. 21, 2017.
The ensuing possession, Manning linked up with Livingstone in the red zone for a 3-yard touchdown. Livingstone finished with four catches for a career-best 128 yards and two touchdowns. The freshman is the third Texas player to have multiple receiving touchdowns in the first quarter of a game in the last 30 years, joining Jaxon Shipley (Sept. 29, 2012) and Joshua Moore (Oct. 9, 2021).
Over the next two drives, Manning found Jack Endries for a pair of scores, as the junior hauled in both a 16-yard catch and a 36-yard reception in the second quarter. In his first career multi-touchdown performance, Endries became the first Texas tight end to have multiple receiving touchdowns in a single quarter of a game since David Thomas on Sept. 3, 2005.
The Longhorns' offense capitalized on a quartet of San José State turnovers in the first half. Texas' four first-half takeaways are tied for its most in any half of a game since accomplishing the feat against Kansas on Nov. 11, 2017.
Defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau collected his first career interception to give the Longhorns a turnover in their 18th straight home game, the longest active streak in the FBS.
To start the second quarter, linebacker Ty'Anthony Smith forced and recovered a fumble at San José State's 36 yard line to set up Texas in plus territory.
Linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. registered a career-best two forced fumbles, as Texas limited the Spartans (0-2) to just seven points before the intermission.
The Longhorns capped off its first drive of the second half on Mason Shipley's first field goal in burnt orange. The transfer kicker converted a 47-yard field goal to push Texas ahead, 31-7.
Late in the third quarter, Texas strung together a six-play, 63-yard drive, highlighted by Manning's 42-yard strike to Livingstone. On the next snap, Manning took it himself, slicing through the defense for a 20-yard rushing touchdown to bring Texas' lead 38-7.
With the victory, the Longhorns are 25-1 (.962) in home openers since 2000, trailing only Oklahoma State (26-0) for the best record in the FBS (min. five seasons as FBS team).
Up next, Texas will host UTEP at 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
