AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Texas Volleyball took down No. 6 Stanford, 3-2, in front of a state of Texas record crowd of 10,899 fans at Moody Center on Sunday afternoon. Texas improved to 4-0 on the season, marking the first 4-0 start since 2022 when it won the National Championship.
Texas was led by junior Torrey Stafford's 18 kills and 10 digs, marking her third double-double as Longhorn in just four matches. Senior libero Emma Halter also recorded 10 digs, while Ella Swindle led with 32 assists.
The win also marked the first time Texas ever defeated Stanford in five sets. The attendance set a UT single-match record and was the largest crowd ever in the state of Texas during the regular season. The previous mark was held by Texas A&M at 9,236.
SET 1: The Longhorns got off to a hot start, winning set one, 25-15. Freshman Cari Spears led with five kills and hit for .571 in the first, holding Stanford to just 10 and a .147 attack percentage. Spears would end the math with a career high 14 kills.
SET 2: Texas took the 2-0 lead after a closer set at 25-23. Spears, again, recorded five kills with the help of Swindle's 10 assists. Despite Stanford hitting .317 and registering 19 kills, the Longhorns attack outdid the Cardinal defense and were without a block in the first two sets.
SET 3: Stanford cut into the Texas lead, winning the third set 25-21. The Cardinal offense spread to five attackers and left the Longhorns to just 12 kills despite Stafford's best efforts.
SET 4: Stanford evened the match at two a piece with a 25-13 set win. Hitting .500 and holding Texas to six kills, Stanford went on a 12-1 run and rallied behind Erika Sayer and Elia Rubin's eight total kills.
SET 5: Stafford took over the fifth set with five kills and helped Texas stave off three match points. Moody Center was electric with the record-setting crowd getting behind them after a 6-0 scoring run and roared off an attack error by Stanford to give Texas the win.
The Longhorns travel to Fort Worth, Texas, on Wednesday to face No. 3 Louisville at the Showdown at the Net Classic.
