Brink records first career goal with 83rd-minute equalizer
AUSTIN, Texas — Against one of the top programs in the country, Texas earned a 1-1 draw against No. 6/17 South Carolina at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought we played really well," head coach Margueritte Bates said. "To come back and respond the way we did with limited time in the second half was a great response. I'm glad we're facing teams of this caliber at this point in the season when we've figured ourselves out a little bit. Hopefully, it prepares us for the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament."
Addie Brink delivered a late equalizer in the 83rd minute, helping the Longhorns (8-3-4, 3-2-3 SEC) register at least one point for the sixth time in their last seven matches.
Brink's first career goal came off of a feed from fellow Dallas native Audrey Bryant. Bryant raced free down the right side before playing a low-liner toward the six-yard box to find the freshman. On her first touch, Brink drilled the ball into the top right corner to level the score, 1-1.
Texas' breakthrough moment marked just the second tally the Gamecocks (11-1-3, 5-0-3) have conceded in conference play. Entering Sunday's showdown, South Carolina ranked fourth in shutout percentage (.714) and sixth in goals against average (.429), among all teams nationally.
South Carolina's lone strike came in the 73rd minute, as the visitors vaulted ahead on Autumn Cayelli's third tally of the season. Off of a chip from Micah Bryant, Cayelli flicked a spinning header home to break the stalemate.
In the draw, the Longhorns outshot the Gamecocks, 19-15, including a 7-5 advantage in attempts on target.
Defensively, Texas drew South Carolina offside on five occasions. Across the last nine contests, the Longhorns have forced their opposition offside 37 times.
Up next, Texas travels to face No. 2/1 Vanderbilt on Friday. Kickoff at Vanderbilt Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m.
