Villarreal delivers second career brace in come-from-behind win
AUSTIN, Texas — Behind Amalia Villarreal's second-half brace, NR/No. 22 Texas posted a 2-1 comeback victory over No. 21/18 Oklahoma at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm just really proud of this group," head coach Margueritte Bates said. "We have all the respect in the world for Oklahoma. OU has been excellent all year. That was a massive win for us. It's a great feeling. Our team understood the power and potential of today. I'm really pleased with the result and our first experience in the Red River rivalry."
Villarreal registered an equalizer for the Longhorns (7-2-3, 2-1-2 SEC) in the 68th minute before mounting the game-winner less than 15 minutes later.
With the Sooners (9-2-2, 3-2-0 SEC) ahead, 1-0, Villarreal forced the visitors to retreat. The junior dribbled toward net and created herself a pocket of space inside the box. As Villarreal wound up to fire a shot, the two-time All-SEC selection was tripped.
Following video review, Texas was awarded a penalty kick and the Longhorns' top goal scorer converted her second penalty kick of the campaign
Villarreal capped off her second career brace, delivering the go-ahead tally from 13 yards away in the 82nd minute. After she had her first attempt blocked, the Lansing, Mich., native secured the loose ball and rocketed a strike into the top right corner to push Texas in front, 2-1.
The 5-foot-2 midfielder totaled nine of the Longhorns' 20 attempts, with her final shot proving to be the difference. Meanwhile, Texas held Oklahoma to only six tries on target.
The Sooners' lone attempt to sneak past the Longhorns came in the 29th minute. Kate McCallister ripped a shot from outside the box that ricocheted off a defender and into the lower left corner of the cage.
Texas netminder Bayliss Flynn notched five saves in the victory, limiting one of the nation's most potent offenses to a co-season-low one goal.
With the result, the Longhorns earned their 200th win at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Texas owns a 200-65-29 (.730) record in Austin, including a 47-14-10 (.732) mark since the start of the 2020 season.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to face Kentucky for the first time since 2008. Friday's affair is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT / 7:30 p.m. ET at Wendell & Vickie Bell Complex.
