Villarreal notches team-leading seventh goal in defeat
LEXINGTON, Ky. — No. 25/18 Texas had its four-match unbeaten streak snapped on Friday night, falling to Kentucky, 3-2, at Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
The Longhorns (7-3-3, 2-2-2 SEC) raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but the Wildcats (7-5-1, 3-2-1 SEC) mounted a trio of tallies after the break to secure their first ranked victory of the season.
Kyla Dawn delivered the game-winning strike in the 90th minute, mounting her team-leading 10th tally. Off of a corner kick, Dawn buried a loose ball into the bottom left corner of the frame.
Kentucky leveled the contest in the 66th minute courtesy of Elise Ernest. With the Wildcats across midfield, Michelle Moskau lofted a service into the box. Ernest leaped in the air and flicked an attempt with her head into the back of the net.
Ernest also helped key Kentucky's first goal eight minutes earlier, lobbing a cross to Rayna Powers. Powers directed the ball toward the frame, ricocheting off a defender to sneak through.
Texas scored both of its tallies over the first 28 minutes, sparked by reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Week Amalia Villarreal. Villarreal registered her third goal in two matches, rocketing a right-footed strike from 20 yards away.
Villarreal ignited the visitors' second tally, sliding a through ball to a streaking Ava McDonald. On her first touch, McDonald ripped a cross in front of the net to find Audrey Bryant's right foot in stride.
In the defeat, Texas outshot Kentucky, 12-11, highlighted by a 9-5 advantage in the first half.
Up next, the Longhorns return home to host LSU on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
