Anastasia Abbagnato went a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles with four ranked wins in helping the Longhorns to two top-12 victories.
Austin – Texas Women's Tennis freshman Anastasia Abbagnato was named the SEC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It marks the first weekly SEC honor of her career and she becomes the second-straight Longhorn to earn the accolade, following Elizabeth Ionescu last week.
Abbagnato posted a combined 5-1 singles and doubles record, including four ranked victories with three in singles and one in doubles. Her play helped lead Texas to two top-12 team wins over No. 12 Vanderbilt (4-1) and No. Duke (4-3) after a narrow 4-3 defeat to No. 6 Oklahoma at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Abbagnato's singles wins all came at No. 2 over No. 12 Julia Garcia Ruiz of Oklahoma (6-4, 6-2), No. 40 Bridget Stammel of Vanderbilt (3-6, 7-5, 7-6 [4]), and No. 120 Liv Hovde of Duke (6-3, 6-7 [5], 6-3). The win over Stammel also clinched the overall match against Vanderbilt, while her victory over Hovde provided the Longhorns with their first lead against Duke at 3-2 after the Blue Devils had led, 2-0.
In doubles, Abbagnato played with two teammates after her regular partner Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo was injured against Oklahoma, but prior to that, they earned a 6-2 win against over Evialina Laskevich and Roisin Gilheany at No. 1. Abbagnato then paired with fellow freshman Mathilde Ngijol-Carré for the first time, and the duo collected a top-50 win over No. 49 Mia Yamakita and Erin Pearce at No. 3. Abbagnato's lone defeat came with Ngijol-Carré in a tiebreaker of a match against Duke that they led late by a break against Aspen Schuman and Irina Balus.
Abbagnato arrived at Texas in January and has put together 4-1 records in both singles and doubles.
The Longhorns will back on the court on Sunday for a doubleheader against UTRGV, beginning at 11 a.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
