No. 1 Softball’s Atwood named SEC Player of the Week

Atwood tied the program’s career home run record after hitting her 58th vs. UTSA on Feb. 8.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1 Texas Softball senior Reese Atwood was named the Southeastern Conference's (SEC) Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. It's Atwood's first career SEC weekly honor and the fifth overall conference weekly honor of her career after earning four from the Big 12 Conference from 2023-24.
Atwood started in all five of Texas' game over the weekend at the UTSA Invitational, helping the Longhorns go 4-1 with three top-25 victories, including a top-10 win vs. No. 9 Nebraska in Texas' season opener on Feb. 6. Atwood tied the program's career home run record after hitting her 58th vs. UTSA on Feb. 8. Atwood is the NCAA's active career home run (58) and RBI leader (232) as well.
Across five games, Atwood slashed .500/1.063/.600 with three home runs, 10 RBI, eight hits, seven runs scored, three walks, one HBP, 17 total bases and one stolen base. Defensively, she recorded 23 putouts and one assist during her three games behind the plate and two at first base. The Sandia, Texas, native had four multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games. Atwood paced Texas in hits, RBI and slugging percentage and hit 6-for-9 with RISP. Atwood also reached base three-of-four times when leading off an inning.
In the Longhorns' season-opening, 15-10, win over No. 9 Nebraska on Feb. 6, Atwood finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. She provided insurance for Texas after hitting a solo home run – her first home run of the season – with two outs in the top of the seventh.
In the 11-6 win vs. No. 25 Washington on Feb. 7, Atwood went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Atwood put Texas in front in the bottom of the first after hitting a two-run home run and then hit a two-RBI single to center in the sixth to extend Texas' lead to 9-6 over the Huskies.
In a rematch vs. No. 9 Nebraska on Feb. 7, Atwood had a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI and stolen base and run scored.
To close out the weekend on Feb. 8, Atwood registered a walk and a run in the 5-0 win vs. No. 25 Washington. In the weekend finale vs. host UTSA, Atwood went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, two runs and a walk. Against the Roadrunners, Atwood smacked her program-record tying 58th career home run in the fifth.
Up next, Atwood and Texas host the Bevo Classic on Feb. 12-15 at McCombs Field. Texas' home opener vs. Abilene Christian is set for 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 12. All six of Texas' games over the weekend will be available to watch on SEC Network+.
