Stewart tied the program’s single-season home run record with her 23rd on the season.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior first baseman Katie Stewart tied the program's single-season home run record with her go-ahead grand slam in the top of the seventh to guide No. 4 Texas Softball to a 6-1 win at Kentucky Saturday afternoon. With the win, Texas has clinched back-to-back road series wins.
Stewart blasted her 23rd home run of the season to match Reese's Atwood single-season program record, which she set last season.
The Longhorns increase their record to 37-8 overall, 14-6 in SEC play and 13-3 on the road.
In the circle, senior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez (7-2) held Kentucky to just two hits across 5.1 innings. The Stamford, Texas, product gave up a solo home run in the top of the first but dominated the Wildcats the remainder of the game. Gutierrez struck out two batters and did not give up any free passes. Gutierrez retired 15 of 17 batters faced, including 12-straight in the first through fourth innings. Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (18-3) replaced Gutierrez with one out in the bottom of the sixth and the top of the Kentucky order coming to the plate. Kavan retired all five batters she faced with one punchout to earn the victory.
Texas scored in the top of the first when senior catcher Reese Atwood knocked in Stewart on a single to left field. Kentucky tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom frame on a leadoff solo home run.
The score remained the same until Texas put up a five-spot in the top of the seventh. Freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols began the inning with a single up the middle, and senior right fielder Ashton Maloney followed with a single through the right side to put two runners on base. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry loaded the bases on a bunt single to the catcher. Stewart then launched a go-ahead grand slam to position UT with a 5-1 lead. Texas scored its sixth run on a Kentucky fielding error, allowing junior Adayah Wallace to score.
Stewart paced Texas with her four RBI on her grand slam. Atwood finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Kayden Henry, senior left fielder Kaiah Altmeyer and Nichols each had two hits.
