No. 1 Softball cruises in series opener at No. 4 Alabama

The Longhorns defeated the Crimson Tide, 9-1.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 1 Texas Softball (32-2) cruised to a 9-1 series opening victory at No. 4 Alabama, 9-1, Thursday night at Rhoads Stadium.
Texas improves to 32-2 overall, 9-1 in Southeastern Conference play, 9-0 on the road and 12-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (15-1) went the distance for Texas, restraining a hot Crimson Tide offense to just one run on five hits with nine strikeouts across 7.0 innings of work. Kavan did not walk a batter and twirled four 1-2-3 innings. The West Des Moines, Iowa, product retired 10 of the last 11 batters she faced. Kavan did not allow an extra-base hit.
The Longhorns outhit Alabama at 13-5 clip, highlighted by Texas' six extra-base hits. The Longhorns tied their season high in home runs with four on the night.
Senior second baseman Leighann Goode notched her first career multi-home run game. Goode went 2-for-3 at the plate with both of her hits being home runs and drove in a team-high four runs. The San Antonio native drove in her fourth run on a sacrifice fly. Goode now has seven home runs on the season.
Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez had a 2-for-3 performance with a home run, two RBI, a double and a walk. Martinez has three home runs this season. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney tied her season high in hits with three singles and also drove in a pair of runs. Junior first baseman Katie Stewart hammered a solo home run – her 18th of the season – and drew two walks. Freshman designated player Hannah Wells went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.
