Farah O’Keefe becomes third player in program history to win the NCAA individual title and the Longhorns advance to NCAA Match Play.
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Farah O'Keefe claimed the third NCAA individual championship in Texas women's golf history and the Longhorns clinched a spot in match play on Monday at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
O'Keefe carded a final round of 2-under and finished at 12-under for the tournament with scores of 69-69-68-70.
O'Keefe joins Heather Bowie (1997) and Charlotta Sorenstam (1993) as NCAA individual champions. Debbie Petrizzi won an AIAW individual title in 1978.
"It's a feeling of all the hard work I've put in coming to fruition," O'Keefe said. "I was telling my coach on the way up from 18 after I finished that this is great, but I want to win a team national championship. It would mean the world for me to bring a national championship home to Austin with me being from Austin. It would be the highlight of my life. I think job is not finished. I was really glad that I was able to figure out this golf course. The last couple years has been a bit of a struggle, but I thought I had a good strategy in place coming into this week."
The Longhorns finished stroke play at 1-over and claimed the No. 4 seed in match play and will take on Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals. That match will get underway tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. CT.
"Today's conditions were really difficult and I was really proud of how the women stayed really composed through the round," Texas head coach Laura Ianello said. "We didn't get off to a great start, but everyone showed their Texas fight today. The fight the whole way was inspiring. We have been working so hard as a team and to see them push through today was great."
