Men’s Swimming wins 15 medals at Pan Pacific and European Championships

Modglin notches four medals (two gold) at Pan Pac’s, while Kós records three golds at European Championships.
AUSTIN, Texas — Current and former University of Texas men's swimmers wrapped up a successful week at the European Championships (Aug. 10-16) in Paris and the Pan Pacific Championships (Aug. 12-15) in Irvine, Calif. All totaled, the Longhorns' contingency combined to record 15 total medals, including eight gold, six silver and one bronze, during the pair of international competitions.
At the Pan Pacific Championships, Texas men's swimmers registered 10 medals, including five gold, four silver and one bronze. Rising senior Will Modglin led the way by winning four medals, including two gold, one silver and one bronze. Modglin swam the leadoff (backstroke) leg (53.40 split) for Team USA on the mixed 4x100m medley relay which won the gold and set a world record with a time of 3:36.70. He also swam the leadoff (backstroke) leg (53.86 split) for Team USA on the 4x100m medley relay which won the gold and set a championship record with a time of 3:29.06. Modglin earned a silver medal in the 100m backstroke (53.37) and claimed the bronze medal in the 50m backstroke (24.66).
Former Longhorn Luke Hobson earned a pair of gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships. He won the 200m freestyle in a championship-record time of 1:43.85. Hobson also swam the leadoff leg (1:44.13) for Team USA on the 4x200m freestyle relay which won the gold and set a championship-record time of 6:59.37. Former Longhorn Carson Foster claimed a trio of silver medals in the 200m butterfly (1:53.67), the 400m individual medley (4:07.11) and the 200m individual medley (1:56.37). Former Longhorn Chris Guiliano swam the leadoff leg (47.51) for Team USA on the 4x100m freestyle relay which won the gold and set a championship-record time of 3:09.01.
Rising senior Rex Maurer posted a sixth-place finish in the 400m freestyle (3:45.72) and a sixth-place showing in the 200m individual medley (1:57.78). Maurer also won the B final in the 400m individual medley (4:12.49). Rising sophomore Campbell McKean won the B final in three separate breaststroke events. He first won the B final in the 100m breaststroke in a time of 59.50, which would have tied for fifth in the A final. McKean won the B final in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 26.94, which would have placed fifth in the A final, and he also won the B final in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:10.28, which would have placed sixth in the A final.
At the European Championships, Texas men's swimmers registered five medals, including three gold and two silver and one bronze. Former Longhorn Hubert Kós earned all three of the gold medals. Kós won the 200m backstroke (1:53.08) and set a European and championship-record time of 1:52.30 during the semifinals. He claimed the gold in the 200m individual medley with a championship-record time of 1:54.24. Kós also swam the leadoff leg (48.18) for Team Hungary on the 4x100 m freestyle relay which won the gold in a championship-record time of 3:10.03. In addition, he placed fourth in the 100m butterfly (50.25) and sixth in the 200m butterfly (1:54.89).
Former Longhorn Caspar Corbeau earned a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke (2:07.78). He also swam the second leg (breaststroke) for Team Netherlands on the mixed 4x100m medley relay which claimed the silver in a time of 3:40.92, and he placed eighth in the 100m breaststroke final (59.48). Rising junior Ksawery Masiuk placed sixth in the 100m backstroke final (52.92), and he swam the leadoff (backstroke) leg (53.13 split) for Team Poland in the mixed 4x100m medley relay which placed seventh (3:46.37).
