Longhorns record largest margin of victory in three years
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas scored a goal for each of its honorees on senior day, as the Longhorns downed Incarnate Word, 6-0, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Sunday evening.
With the win, Texas (4-1-1) registered its largest margin of victory since topping Stephen F. Austin, 7-0, on Sept. 7, 2023. The Longhorns also posted half a dozen tallies for the first time in more than two years.
Texas found the back of the net early and often, delivering three goals apiece in each half against the Cardinals (3-3-0).
Five different Longhorns put their name on the scoring sheet, with Amalia Villarreal sparking the outburst in the fourth minute.
Villarreal notched her fourth goal in six matches this season, finishing off a feed across the box from Alicia Riggins.
In the 17th minute, Ava McDonald doubled the advantage, recording her first tally of the season. McDonald weaved her way through the visitors' backline and tucked a 22-yard right-footed rocket into the far corner of the cage.
After being subbed on moments earlier, Audrey Bryant netted her first goal of the year, tapping home a near-post service from Kennedi Cotter on a corner kick. Bryant's strike in the 31st minute pushed Texas ahead, 3-0, which marked its largest halftime lead of non-conference action.
The Longhorns picked up right where they left off coming out of the break, scoring twice in an 80-second stretch.
In the 47th minute, Riggins curled a left-footed bender from 15 yards away that was ticketed for the left side of the twine. The junior's tally came on a pair of swift passes from Molly MacMillan and Bryant.
Callan Harrington followed with her signature senior moment at the 47:36 mark, collecting her second goal in as many contests. Off of Cotter's chip forward, Harrington buried the opportunity into the bottom right corner.
Despite the 5-0 cushion minutes into the second half, Texas pressured Incarnate Word the rest of the way, punctuating the night with an own goal.
Once again, Cotter played a ball ahead toward the mouth of the net. With the Cardinals under duress from multiple Longhorns, Incarnate Word was unable to keep the ball from sneaking past its keeper.
Across the 90-minute affair, Texas outshot the Cardinals, 21-9. The Longhorns mounted double-digit attempts in both frames, directing 13 shots on target.
In the victory, 24 different Texas players logged minutes, with seven student-athletes earning at least one point. In between the pipes, Bayliss Flynn, Caroline Dill and Annis-Clara Wright totaled three saves to guide the Longhorns to their fourth clean sheet in their first six matches.
Prior to Sunday's tilt, Texas recognized Arianna Brothers, Dill, Flynn, Amaya Haley, Harrington and Hannah Tate, as well as student-manager Mariza Casarez and sports medicine aide Ashley Watt. The Longhorns also honored fifth-years Toni Lopez and EmJ Witt in their final season of collegiate eligibility.
Up next, Texas wraps up its non-conference slate at TCU on Sept. 6. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
