No. 1/1 Football’s Goosby named Outland Trophy National Player of the Week

The senior offensive lineman earns his first career Outland Trophy National Player of the Week honor.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1/1 Texas Football senior offensive lineman Trevor Goosby has been named the Outland Trophy's National Player of the Week, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Tuesday.
It's Goosby's first career weekly national honor from the Outland Trophy. The Melissa, Texas, product earned a spot on the award's preseason watch list on Aug. 4.
Texas has won two of the last three Outland Trophies and five overall. Former Longhorn left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. won the prestigious award in 2024 and former Texas defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat took home the trophy in 2023. Former Texas defensive tackle Scott Appleton (1963), linebacker Tommy Nobis (1965) and defensive tackle Brad Shearer (1977) have also won the award. Earlier this week, Goosby picked up his second career SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honor.
Goosby powered Texas to its first 20-plus-point comeback in the fourth quarter against a No. 1 team in 22 years in Texas' 24-23 win over No. 1/1 Ohio State at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium on Sept. 12. It was the second-largest fourth-quarter comeback and the fourth-largest overall comeback in program history. The Longhorns moved to 2-0 and captured their 11th-consecutive victory at home, including their fourth-straight win at home against a ranked opponent, which leads the nation.
Goosby was the top-graded offensive lineman and allowed no sacks and just one pressure on 46 pass blocks against Ohio State. The Longhorns' offense manufactured three-consecutive touchdown drives to end the game. Goosby's impact was most important in the fourth quarter, as each of the Longhorns' three-consecutive touchdown drives to end the game took at least 12 plays and covered at least 72 yards to overcome a 23-3 deficit. The first two drives (15 and 13 plays) included clutch fourth-down conversions in Texas territory to keep the rally alive.
In the fourth quarter alone, Goosby and the offensive line helped the Longhorns compile 150 yards of total offense – 83 passing and 67 rushing – in outgaining the Buckeyes, 150-52. Including the final drive of the third quarter, Texas totaled 236 total yards in the last 21 minutes of the game. The Longhorns became the only team in the past 15 years to close a victory with three-straight touchdown drives of 12 or more plays.
The win was the third-largest comeback win by any FBS team against an AP No. 1 team this century, while Texas became the first non-conference opponent this century to score 21-plus points in the fourth quarter against Ohio State.
This is the fourth season for the FWAA to select an Outland Trophy National Player of the Week as part of the NCFAA's weekly national honors from 12 awards. The FWAA will announce the Outland Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 18, and those players will then be paired down to three finalists announced on Nov. 24. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from those finalists who will be part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends and edge rushers are not eligible.
The recipient of the 2026 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Dec. 11. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 27, 2027.
The Longhorns are back in action at 7 p.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 19, against the UTSA Roadrunners at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. The game will stream on SEC Network+ with Clay Matvick (play-by-play), Rocky Boiman (analyst) and Austyn Iven (reporter) on the call.
