Soccer earns double-overtime victory against Kansas

AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) slipped a low shot past Kansas goalkeeper Megan Miller with 1:59 remaining in double overtime to lift Texas (11-5-1, 6-3-1) to a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Kansas (15-3, 7-2 Big 12) on Sunday, Oct. 24 in front of 1,046 fans at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 24.
Wilson collected a through ball from Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) at midfield and fought off three Jayhawks before pushing a low shot to the right past Miller for her second game-winning overtime goal in as many contests. With the victory, Texas earned its first win over a Top-10 team in 2004 while notching its third straight shutout to extend its home winning streak to a school-record 10 games, while KU lost for the first time in the last eight contests.
UT came out on the attack early and generated some early chances, including a shot glancing off the crossbar from Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.), but the Kansas defense and goalkeeper Meghan Miller were up to the task and held the Horns off the board. While the Jayhawks would produce three opportunities later in the period with their three shots to counter Texas' 14 total shots, both teams headed into the intermission embroiled in a scoreless tie.
In the second half, Kansas came out quickly looking to grab the lead and had Caroline Smith break free off an intercepted clear in UT territory and rip a shot that Alex Gagarin (Austin, Texas) came out and deflected wide of the near post to keep the game knotted at 0-0. While Texas only merely outshot the Jayhawks by a 7-5 margin in the period, Wilson had the best opportunity for either side in the final two minutes when she broke free on the left side and fired a shot that was stopped by a diving Miller in the KU goal. Despite the near misses for both clubs, the tie persisted through 90 minutes and sent the game into overtime.
After the first overtime did not see either side score despite another near miss by Wilson, who sent a header from eight yards out off the near post, the second extra session began and looked as if the tie would be the end result. Then, with a little over two minutes to go, Gagarin took a free kick in her own penalty area that Schmit headed at midfield to a streaking Wilson, who beat three KU defenders and Miller for her team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the year. Gagarin, who picked up two saves on the day to go along with an assist, notched her fourth win and third consecutive shutout, while Miller incurred the loss despite allowing only her sixth goal of the year against and making seven stops.
Paving the way for the UT offense, which collected 27 shots on the afternoon, was Wilson, who fired a game-high eight shots and collected her 11th goal of the year, and Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas), who tallied a total of five shots off the bench. Kansas, meanwhile, had its nine-shot attack led by the duo of Lauren Williams and Caroline Smith, who each posted a pair of shots. Of additional note for UT, the Texas defense has now not allowed a goal in its last 298-plus (298:18) minutes of action.
The Longhorns now head to Dallas, Texas, to face SMU on Wednesday, Oct. 27 to conclude the 2004 regular season with a 7 p.m. Central match.
