Soccer earns 2-2 tie with SMU
10.27.2004 | Soccer
DALLAS -- After rallying from behind twice to tie the game and send the contest into overtime, No. 21 Texas (11-5-2, 6-3-1 Big 12) out shot SMU (11-3-3, 4-1-1 WAC) by a 7-1 margin during the two 10-minute extra sessions but ended up settling for a 2-2 tie with the Mustangs in front of 1,022 fans at Westcott Field on Wednesday, Oct. 27. Of note, the match marked the third consecutive overtime game for the Horns.
SMU broke on top 1-0 less than eight minutes into the match as Adria Campbell found the back of the UT net for her eighth goal of the season off assists from Jill Heineman and Olivia O'Rear. Texas would answer just over two minutes later when Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) converted a pass from Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) to notch her third goal of the season and tie the game a 1-1. While UT managed to out shoot SMU by a 7-4 margin in the opening period, the score remained deadlocked at one apiece at halftime.
In the second half, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead almost immediately as Ashley Watson scored off a feed from O'Rear in the 47th minute to make it a 2-1 contest. Continuing to press their attack, the Horns eventually found the equalizer at 69:59 as Nicole Breger (Sterling Heights, Mich.) tallied her first goal of the year to deadlock the game at 2-2. After the remaining 20 minutes in regulation ticked off the clock with neither side gaining the upper hand, the match headed to overtime. The Longhorns would put a pair of shots on goal in the first extra period, but SMU goalkeeper Amy Bennett was up to the task and kept the game tied. In the second overtime, UT fired two shots to the Mustangs' one, which was stopped by Texas goalkeeper Alex Gagarin (Austin, Texas), but again neither club could break through as both teams settled for the 2-2 result after 110 minutes of action.
While the defenses were led by Gagarin for UT and Bennett for SMU, who tallied three and six saves, respectively, on the evening, the offenses were paced by Texas' Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas), who fired a match-high five shots, and Heineman for the Mustangs, who came up with an assist and tallied a club-best four shots.
With the match against the Mustangs concluding the 2004 regular season for UT, the Longhorns will now make their way to San Antonio, Texas, for the 2004 Big 12 Conference Tournament to be held at the Blossom Athletic Complex on Nov. 3, 5 and 7. For tickets, contact Ticketmaster at Ticketmaster.com.
