Carpenter's overtime goal gives Soccer 1-0 victory over No. 25 Nebraska

AUSTIN, Texas -- Kelsey Carpenter scored in the seventh minute of the first overtime to lift Texas to a 1-0 win over No. 25 Nebraska in front of 1,185 fans at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 16.
While the overtime match marked the second of the season for both squads, the Horns' (8-6-1, 5-3-0 Big 12) victory over the Huskers (9-5-1, 3-2-1 Big 12) gave them wins in four of their last five matches, including three in a row, and 19 of their last 21 home games. Additionally, the shutout marked the sixth of the year for Texas and the squad's second in the last three contests.
Although the Longhorns managed to outshoot NU by a 13-5 margin in the first half, Huskers' starting goalkeeper Jamie Klages made three first half saves and had her defense clear a would-be goal off the goal line late in the period, the match remained scoreless through 45 minutes of action. In the second period, UT starter Dianna Pfenninger made two of her five second-half stops early in the period to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 and Klages came up with three more saves over the half to send the match into overtime without a goal for either side.
After outshooting the Longhorns narrowly in the second period by a 9-8 count, the Huskers came out with urgency in the first extra session and got a quick shot on goal from Aysha Jamani, but Pfenninger pushed the blast just over the top of the crossbar to keep the tilt tied at 0-0. Following a couple more chances for Nebraska early on, Carpenter (Allen, Texas) got a cross off deep in the right corner that just missed connecting with one of her teammates crashing the net. Moments later at 6:36 of the first overtime session, Carpenter again broke free in the corner and laced a cross into the box that curved inside the far post and squeezed under the diving Klages to give Texas the victory. While Pfenninger came up with a career-best eight saves en route to picking up her fifth win of the year and third career shutout, Klages shouldered the tough loss after tallying six stops.
Paving the way for the UT offense, which amassed 22 shots on the day, was Carpenter, who scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year and second game-winner of the season, and Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas), who fired a game-high seven shots. The Nebraska attack, meanwhile, was led by the duo of Brittany Timko and Jamani, who combined for nine of the Huskers' 15 shots.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to Missouri for a 7 p.m. Central match against the Tigers on Friday, Oct. 21.
