Volleyball sweeps Kansas in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Texas dominated at the net - connecting for 16 blocks and hitting .310 - as the 14th-ranked Longhorn volleyball team swept Kansas 30-22, 30-20, 30-21 on Saturday evening at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The victory was Texas' fourth in a row over KU and marked the second season sweep of the Jayhawks in a row.
Dariam Acevedo led all players with 14 kills in the victory as Jen Christian, Leticia Armstrong and Brandy Magee all added nine kills apiece. Heather Schreiber came off the bench in the third game to swing for a career-high five kills, knocking down all five of her swings on the evening.
Magee had a match-high six blocks while five different Horns had a solo block in the team's second-best blocking performance of the season.
With the victory, Texas (16-3, 11-2 Big 12) won its fourth-straight match, while Kansas (12-10, 4-9) suffered its seventh-straight defeat.
After a .100 hitting effort in the first game, Texas responded with a .516 mark in game two and a .428 effort in game three, swinging for 20 and 19 kills in the frames, respectively. For the match, Texas out-hit Kansas, .310 to .128.
Alyson Jennings had a match-high 17 digs as Texas tallied 10 more digs than Kansas, 48 to 38. With 11, Christian had her fifth double-figure effort of the season.
Christian also added three aces as Texas had six to KU's three.
Emily Brown led Kansas with 10 kills, while Paula Caten added eight and setter Andy Rozum had seven. Caten also had a team-high nine digs. Josi Lima and Savannah Noyes each had team-best three blocks for KU.
Texas fell behind by four points right out of the gates in game one as the Jayhawks pulled out to a 5-1 lead. Out of a timeout, UT used a quick 3-0 run to pull within one point at 6-5 and after two KU points, mounted an 8-0 run to go ahead by five at 13-8. The Longhorns used three blocks and a pair of aces by Christian in the spurt.
Kansas responded with its own 4-0 rally later tied the score at 15-15. The teams played through three more ties before a KU attack error kicked off a 9-3 run for Texas, pushing the score to 28-21. A Caten kill held off game point, but back-to-back kills by Acevedo and Magee gave Texas the game and a 1-0 lead.
Acevedo's eight kills headlined the Horns' first-game attack as UT held KU to negative hitting at -.020. Texas had seven blocks and matched KU's 24 digs to help with the defensive pressure.
In the second game, the teams battled through five ties before Texas pulled out to a four-point lead at 10-6. As in the first game, Kansas responded with rally, another 4-0 spurt, to knot the score at 11-11. After six straight side-outs, Acevedo and Lauren Paolini had consecutive kills and Jennings added an ace to push Texas ahead by three points at 17-14, the closest KU got the rest of the game.
UT continued to build its lead as the game wore on, going ahead by nine with an Armstrong kill. Armstrong and Acevedo closed out the game with two kills to put Texas ahead, 2-0, as the teams headed to intermission.
With 20 kills in the second game, five different Texas players had at least three kills in the game. UT added four more blocks in the stanza, but Kansas managed a .303 hitting mark in the game. Brown had five kills to pace the Jayhawks.
With UT holding a 3-2 lead to open game three, Lima had back-to-back kills to put Kansas ahead, 4-3. The Jayhawks maintained a two-point lead until Acevedo put down a kill and then combined with Armstrong for a block that tied the score at 8-8. Caten came back with a kill and Rozum added an ace allowing KU to again emerge by two points, but Texas powered down a 7-0 run behind Michelle Moriarty's serve to take a five-point lead at 15-10.
UT pushed its lead to seven points after a KU ball-handling error made the score 19-12, and then moved ahead by 10 points - at 23-13 - as Armstrong had two blocks and a kill in a UT mini-run. Kansas put together a 5-1 rally to pull within five points at 25-20, but Texas ran off its own 5-1 response to take the game and sweep the match.
The Longhorns take a break from Big 12 play when they head down I-35 to face Texas State in a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Texas comes back home on Saturday, Nov. 5, when the team hosts Baylor in a 6:30 p.m. match.
