Vasher and Rogers named to NFC Pro Bowl team
12.21.2005 | Football
Former Longhorns and current Chicago Bears CB Nathan Vasher and Detriot Lions DT Shaun Rogers have been named to the NFL Pro Bowl and will be representing their teams on the NFC roster. The 2006 Pro Bowl will take place Sunday, Feb. 12, in Hawaii and will be aired at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN.
It will be Vasher's first Pro Bowl, while Rogers will be going for the second consecutive year. Vasher becomes 30th different former Longhorn to earn a Pro Bowl selection and with Rogers, UT players have made a total of 72 appearances.
This is also the 13th time in Pro Bowl history and the third time in the last four years that two former Longhorns have been selected in the same year. In 2004, Pittsburgh Steelers DT Casey Hampton and Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes both went, while in 2003, Holmes and Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams were both chosen. Williams was named MVP of the game with 56 rushing yards and two TDs that year.
Vasher is tied for the NFC lead with a team-high and career-high eight interceptions, two shy of the franchise record set by Mark Carrier in 1990. No other Bears players have had more than eight interceptions since Roosevelt Taylor led the NFL with nine in 1963. Vasher also set a record with the longest play in NFL history, returning a missed field goal 108 yards for a touchdown in a 17-9 win over the 49ers Nov. 13 at Soldier Field.
In 12 games this season, having missed two due to injury, Rogers has accumulated 5.5 sacks for 44 yards and four tackles for loss. The latter statistic has helped the Detroit defense earn third place among NFL squads in tackles for loss with 50 for 115 yards through 14 games.
