Baseball pulls out 5-4 victory over UT-Arlington

AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second time in as many games the Longhorns won in their last at bat as a RBI-single off the bat of Clay Van Hook (Brenham, Texas) plated Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Colo.) with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift No. 1 Texas (12-0) to a 5-4 comeback victory over UT-Arlington (4-7) in front of 4,151 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Texas used a wild pitch and a two-out, RBI-single off the bat of Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) to plate a pair of scores after David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas) had singled and moved to third on a bunt base hit from Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.) with one down in the frame. UT-Arlington would counter two innings later in the fifth when Nathan Warrick came up with a one-out, bases-loaded double to bring in three runs and then scored on a RBI-base hit from Ryan Nelson to stake the Mavericks to a 4-2 advantage. The score then stayed that way entering the eighth as the Mavericks were held in check and the Horns were kept hitless between the fourth and seventh innings by starter Jeremiah Haar and reliever B.J. Brandenberger.
After threatening in the seventh as two batters were hit by pitches, the Longhorns managed to load the bases on two walks and a single by Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) before Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) came up with a two-run single through the left side to knot the score a 4-4. UTA's Blake Pierson would then work out of the eighth-jam after a sacrifice and a double play ended the frame. Following a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, the Horns put the winning run in scoring position with one out when Beamon was hit with a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Van Hook then delivered a single through the right side to give Texas its fourth come-from-behind win in as many games. Picking up the win in relief for the Horns was Buck Cody (Oklahoma City, Okla.), who tossed two scoreless frames and retired all six of the batters he faced, while Pierson incurred the loss.
Headlining the UT offense on the day was Johnston, who recorded his seventh multiple-hit effort as he went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Teagarden, who drove in two of Texas' five runs, and four other Longhorns who each collected one hit, including Stubbs, who upped his current hitting streak to 12 games, which matches the longest streak of his career. Meanwhile, UTA was paced by Warrick, who went 2-for-3, drove in three runs and scored another, and Williams, who also tallied a multi-hit effort by going 2-for-4 with one run scored on the day.
Up next, Texas wraps up its 12-game homestand with a three-game series at Disch-Falk Field against Youngstown State beginning on Friday, Feb. 25 at 2:30 p.m. Central. Of note, the final two games of the series with the Penguins are set for Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 12 noon.
