Boone's seven scoreless innings help Baseball down Youngstown State

AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore pitcher Randy Boone (Yoakum, Texas) posted a career-best seven inning performance while the Longhorns' offense pounded out 14 hits, including a career four-hit day from sophomore Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas), as No. 1 Texas (13-0) tallied its third shutout of the season with a 14-0 victory over Youngstown State (1-2) in front of 4,167 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Friday, Feb. 25.
Both offenses went quietly in the first two innings, but in the top of the third, Youngstown State managed to load the bases with two outs via a hit batter and consecutive singles. With the Penguins looking to grab the first lead of the game, Boone registered his third strikeout in as many innings to end the frame and keep the contest scoreless. In the bottom of the inning, Texas tried its hand at a two-out rally of its own after back-to-back singles from Peoples and Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) combined with an error to place runners on second and third, but first baseman Brian Boone snared a grounder headed through the right side off the bat of Clay Van Hook (Brenham, Texas) to keep the score 0-0. UT then broke the deadlock one inning later in the fourth as Will Crouch (Austin, Texas) came up with a two-out single with runners on first and second to stake the Horns to a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Texas offense struck for seven runs on four hits to establish an 8-0 advantage as Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) delivered a one-out, two-run single, Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) drew a bases-loaded walk two batters later and an error combined with a two-run base hit off the bat of Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.) to plate four runs. The Horns then tacked on two more scores in the sixth courtesy of consecutive RBI-doubles from Thomas Incaviglia (Monterrey, Calif.) and Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Calif.) and three more runs in the seventh via an error, a wild pitch and another Incaviglia run-scoring single to jump out to a 13-0 lead. Boone, meanwhile, limited YSU to only two hits between the fourth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Longhorns would add on another run as Peoples singled home Dooley Prince (Sulphur, La.), who reached on a walk and proceeded to second on a walk issued to Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.) to make it 14-0. The Penguins would look to score in the top of the ninth when they received consecutive singles from Charles Schultz and Justin Banks, but Bryan Herrera (Austin, Texas), who came on in the top of the eighth, induced a double-play and fly out to end the threat and preserve the shutout. Picking up the win for Texas was Boone, who hurled a career-best 7.0 innings and allowed only four hits while fanning five batters. Meanwhile, Youngstown State starter Justin Thomas shouldered the loss.
Pacing the Horns' offense on the day was Peoples, who tallied his first multiple-hit game of his career by going a career best 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, Incaviglia, who collected three hits while scoring two runs and driving in two more, and Johnston, who recorded his team-best eighth multiple-hit as well as multiple-RBI outing with a 2-for-6 effort that included a pair of RBI. On the other side of the ledger, the Penguins were led by Banks, who collected two hits on the afternoon and four other players that each tallied one hit. Of additional note for UT, Stubbs also extended his current hit streak to a career-long 13 games with a 1-for-3 outing.
The Horns and Penguins square off in the second tilt of their three-game series at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. Central.
