Turner helps Softball celebrate Senior Day victory
04.23.2005 | Softball
AUSTIN, Texas -- Wynter Turner (San Pedro, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the third-ranked Texas softball team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 victory over Iowa State at McCombs Field on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,010 fans. Texas (34-8, 8-3 Big 12) honored its seven seniors before the game, before moving to 20-0 all-time against the Cyclones (15-27, 1-11). Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) threw her Big 12-leading 14th shutout of the season, a four-hitter, in the circle.
The Longhorns scored all the runs they needed in the third inning when they pushed across both runs. With one out, Monica Askew (Houston, Texas) reached on an error and advanced to third on a double down the left-field line by Desiree Williams (Tucson, Ariz.). Megan Willis (Chandler, Ariz.) then drove in pinch runner Lacy Robinson (Highlands, Texas) with a sacrifice fly - hauled in by a diving Kristy Olsen in right field - and Williams came home when Turner put a two-out single into left field. The two runs proved to be all the offense UT would need as they finished with six hits on the day.
Osterman (20-4) threw the shutout on four hits while striking out 12 and walking two. ISU's Katie Reichling (6-10) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking three.
The Longhorns honored their seven seniors and their families in a pregame ceremony on the field. Askew, Amy Bradford, Alexis Garcia, Melanie Jarrett, Lacy Robinson, Lizi Sowers, Turner and their families were all brought onto the field and celebrated by the coaching staff in what was one of their final regular-season games at McCombs Field.
The two teams will complete the weekend series on Sunday with a 3 p.m. game at McCombs Field that will be aired live on ESPN2. There will be a free pregame kids carnival prior to the game - beginning at 1 p.m. - in the Disch-Falk Field parking lot across Comal Street from McCombs.
