No. 1 Baseball edged 2-1 by Texas State in 10 innings

AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite putting the go-ahead run in scoring position in each of the final three innings, No. 1 Texas (35-8) dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Texas State (28-17) in 10 innings in front of 4,788 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Wednesday, April 27.
The Bobcats' Cassidy Dresch singled in what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the 10th with one out after a passed ball and a sacrifice placed a runner in scoring position.
Two walks to open the top of the third followed by a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to first base produced a 1-0 lead for Texas State. In the bottom of the fourth, Will Crouch (Austin, Texas) connected on his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The Bobcats would threaten to break the deadlock in the top of the fifth as Dresch drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a two-out passed ball, but UT starter Kenn Kasparek (Weimar, Texas) induced his next batter to fly out and end the inning. Texas State starter Ryan Bennett, meanwhile, kept the Horns' offense in check through six to keep the deadlock in tact.
Texas threatened in the bottom of the seventh as freshman catcher Todd Gilfillan (Austin, Texas) tripled down the left field line with one out for his first career hit, but Bobcats reliever Tyler Bryant got his next batter to ground to third baseman Kyle Anson, who threw Gilfillan out at home to keep the game tied. The Horns then received a leadoff double from Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) in the eighth, but a groundball to the left side caused Stubbs to collide with Anson that produced an interference call and ended the threat.
In the ninth, Crouch was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, but after a sacrifice, pinch-hitter Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Colo.) was caught stealing at third for the second out of the inning. Still battling, the Horns then managed to load the bases on two walks and an infield hit, but Nick Peoples' (Round Rock, Texas) ground ball deep into the right-side hole was picked up by second baseman Nolan Mast to send the game into extra innings.
Texas State, after being held without a hit from the third inning through the ninth, then received a one-out base hit up-the-middle from Dresch in the top of the 10th to score Elliot Babcock, who reached on a passed ball after striking out to open the frame and advancing on sac bunt, to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Although the Horns put three balls in play in their half of the 10th, Texas State's defense held on to seal the win and give reliever Chris Hill his second save of the season. Earning the win was B.J. Boening, who worked a scoreless eighth and ninth, while Texas reliever Randy Boone (Yoakum, Texas) shouldered the tough loss despite fanning two in the 10th inning.
Headlining the Longhorns' six-hit attack were two-hit evenings from Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas), who recorded his fourth straight multi-hit effort to extend his current hit streak to seven games, and Gilfillan, who went 2-for-4. On the other side of the ledger, Texas State was led by Anson and Dresch, who each collected a hit and drove in one run, and Bennett, who struck out five while allowing only one run on two hits over six innings. Of additional for UT, Kasparek, surrendered only one run on two hits while striking out four over five innings during his sixth start of the year, while Stubbs upped his current hitting streak to 10 games.
