TUCSON, Ariz. -- Three days after guiding The University of Texas baseball team to the 2005 National Championship behind a 56-16 overall record, head coach Augie Garrido was tabbed as the 2005 National Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Wednesday, June 29.
While the national coach of the year accolade marks Garrido's first since 2002, when he led the Longhorns to their last national title, it is also the sixth he has received during his 37-year career (1975, 1979, 1984, 1995, 2002 and 2005).
Garrido has not only led five different teams to national crowns (three at Cal St. Fullerton - 1979, 1984, 1995 and two at Texas - 2002, 2005), but is also the all-time winningest coach in Division I athletics with 1,542 victories to his credit. Notably, he has also led Texas to five College World Series (CWS) appearances in the last six seasons, including four in a row, and has had his Longhorns teams finish first in both 2002 and 2005, second in 2004 and third in 2003.
