Longhorns are lone Power Four program with multiple honorees on first team
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas student-athletes Anthony Pack Jr. and Sam Cozart were named Freshman All-Americans, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Monday afternoon.
Pack Jr. and Cozart were among the 34 standout freshmen selected by the NCBWA, as the duo collected first-team distinction. The Longhorns are the lone Power Four program with multiple honorees on the top team.
The 2026 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be unveiled on Tuesday.
Pack Jr., who was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Year, has posted a team-best .359 average with 11 home runs, 52 RBI and a 1.082 OPS. His team-leading 20 stolen bases are the most by a Texas freshman since Drew Stubbs swiped 28 bags in 2004.
In league play, Pack Jr. registered the SEC's top batting average (.400) and on-base percentage (.511). He became the first SEC rookie to hit .400 in conference action since Mississippi State's Jake Mangum accomplished the feat in 2016.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound outfielder also tied for second in hits (44), tied for third in walks (23), tied for fifth in doubles (10) and stolen bases (12), and finished sixth in OPS (1.111).
A finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, Cozart has notched a 6-0 ledger and nine saves, matching Portland's Alex Via for the most of any freshman in the country.
Among Division I hurlers (min. 45 inn.), the 6-foot-6, 260-pound right-hander ranks first in WHIP (0.69) and batting average against (.132). He also sits second in ERA (1.65), trailing only UC Santa Barbara's Jackson Flora (1.06).
Cozart has recorded 71 strikeouts and issued only 12 walks over 49 innings. In SEC play, the High Point, N.C. native paced all pitchers (min. 25 inn.) in ERA (1.01) and WHIP (0.64), while logging a co-league-best seven saves.
