Right-hander has totaled 6-0 with 1.64 ERA and nine saves in debut campaign
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns standout Sam Cozart was named the Co-Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Perfect Game announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cozart shared the prestigious honor with North Carolina's Caden Glauber. Jack Ohman (Yale) won Perfect Game's inaugural Freshman Pitcher of the Year Award last season.
Earlier on Tuesday, Cozart was also selected as the NCBWA National Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He is a finalist for the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year and the Stopper of the Year Award.
Among Division I hurlers (min. 45 inn.) Cozart sits first in WHIP (0.69) and batting average against (.132). The 6-foot-6, 260-pound right-hander's 1.64 ERA also checks in second, trailing only Perfect Game Pitcher of the Year Jackson Flora (1.06).
Heading into the Men's College World Series, Cozart boasts a 6-0 record and nine saves, tying Portland's Alex Via for the most of any freshman nationally.
Across 49 innings, the NCBWA Freshman All-American has mounted 71 strikeouts compared to just 12 walks.
Against SEC opponents, Cozart led all pitchers (min. 25 inn.) in ERA (1.01) and WHIP (0.64), while notching a co-league-best seven saves.
