NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Texas softball team completed a Big 12 sweep of Oklahoma today with a 2-0 win and a no-hitter from senior Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) despite a brief suspension of play due to severe weather passing over the OU Softball Complex in Norman, Okla.
For Osterman, it was her 20th career no-hitter and fifth of the 2006 season. She ended with 14 strikeouts from 22 batters faced and was a hit batter away from a perfect game. The game marked Texas' 24th shutout of the season.
Texas moves to 43-4 overall, 9-1 in the Big 12 while the Sooners move to 27-17-1 overall and 4-9 in conference action.
Sophomore Desiree Williams (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up where the Longhorns (43-4, 9-1 Big 12) left off Friday with a home run to start the game deep over left center field for her team-leading 10th home run of the season. It also marked her fifth consecutive game in a row with at least one hit.
Texas would score two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead after senior Chez Sievers (Mission Viejo, Calif.) notched her fifth hit in as many trips to the plate to drive home senior Tina Boutelle (Katy, Texas). Sievers finished the series 5-of-6 with three RBI and zero strikeouts.
Before the start of the bottom of the third inning, the game was suspended due to severe weather in the Norman, Okla. area around the OU Softball Complex for 45 minutes. UT came back onto the field and were unable to generated anymore runs, but held the Sooners from the bases with seven strikeouts in the remaining 12 batters.
The Longhorns return to Austin tonight before heading to Lubbock, Texas to face Texas Tech in a late week doubleheader on Thursday April 20th. The first game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. to be followed with the night cap game at 6 p.m.
