No. 12 Washington downs Softball, 4-0

FULLERTON, Calif. -- After playing its way into the Judi Garman Classic consolation bracket semifinals, the eighth-ranked Texas Softball team struggled offensively against No. 12 Washington, as junior righthander Caitlin Noble tossed a no-hitter in the Huskies 4-0 semifinal victory. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 23-6 on the season, while UW improved to 20-7 on the year.
Washington scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings and it would prove to be all the scoring the Huskies would need. Junior shortstop Ashley Charters led off the first frame with a single through the middle and Marnie Koziol followed with a base-hit through the left side. Charters was forced out when senior second baseman Dominique Lastrapes reached on a fielder's choice, but Koziol stayed aboard and came home on an RBI single by Dena Tyson. Lastrapes then added UW's second run of the inning when she scored on sacrifice fly by Alicia Matthews.
In the second inning, Washington widened the margin to 4-0, using an RBI triple by Charters to plate its first run of the frame and an RBI single by Koziol to score Charters from third.
Only two Texas hitters reached base in the contest - senior catcher Megan Willis reached in the second inning on an error and senior first baseman Jacqueline Williams claimed first base in the sixth inning after a second Huskies miscue.
Texas' starter Meagan Denny (15-5) suffered the loss for the Longhorns, after being tagged for four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work. Freshman righthander Erin Tresselt came on in relief of Denny, scattering six hits in 5.1 scoreless innings, while striking out three Huskies. Noble (9-3) earned the victory for Washington, striking out 11 and walking zero in her complete game no-hitter.
The Longhorns return to action Thursday, March 22 when they take on UT San Antonio in game two of the season series. The game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch and will be televised in Austin on Texas Student Television.
