No. 4 Softball overpowers Kentucky in series opener

Texas clinched its 17th run-rule win of the season with a 12-2 victory in six innings.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 Texas Softball overpowered Kentucky, 12-2 (six innings), to clinch the series opener Friday night at John Cropp Stadium.
The Longhorns improve to 36-8 overall, 13-6 in SEC play and 12-3 on the road this season.
Texas matched its season-high in hits with 17 en route to claiming its 17th run-rule victory of the season. Four of UT's hits went for extra bags.
Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez matched her season high in hits with a 4-for-5 performance that included an RBI and also scored on a double. Martinez has registered four hits in two of her last three games. Junior first baseman Katie Stewart powered Texas with three RBI on two hits, including a double. The Frankfort, Ill., native also reached base on a walk. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry went 3-for-5 at the dish with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman designated player Hannah Wells drove in two runs on a double, and senior left fielder Kaiah Altmeyer knocked in two runs on a double of her own. Freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols bashed a season-high three hits and scored twice. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney knocked her third triple of the season and recorded an infield single.
In the circle, junior RHP Teagan Kavan (17-3) received the win after going 4.0 innings and holding the Wildcats to two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Kavan retired the first nine batters she faced, not allowing Kentucky to reach base until the fourth inning. Wells twirled 2.0 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts. Wells did not walk a batter.
