AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Softball signee Brittany Barnhill (Justin, Texas/Northwest HS) struck out 16 batters on Tuesday, April 10, to break the Texas high school state record for career strikeouts with 1,559.
Barnhill broke the record previously held by Baylor pitcher Kirsten Shortridge, who recorded 1,544 strikeouts during her prep career. The record-breaking strikeout also moved the 6'1" right-handed pitcher into the No. 10 position in the national high school record books.
One of three players in the Longhorns' 2007-2008 recruiting class, Barnhill has not allowed an earned run in 23 games this season at Northwest High School. In addition to her imposing presence in the circle, Barnhill is also an offensive threat, batting .525 with 18 stolen bases, 11 doubles and four home runs this season.
Barnhill plays her club ball with Impact Gold out of Houston, and she will be the fourth Impact alumnae on the Texas roster. Current Longhorns Kori Cook, Kacie Gaskin and Crystal Saenz all competed for the club team when it finished fourth at the 2005 ASA Gold Nationals.
