No. 5 Softball drops game two to No. 7 Arkansas

Texas will look to salvage the series at Noon CT Saturday at McCombs Field.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 5 Texas Softball dropped game two to No. 7 Arkansas, 4-3, Friday night at McCombs Field.
Texas moves to 38-10 overall, 15-8 in SEC play and 15-10 against ranked opponents.
Junior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez (7-3) made her eighth start of the year in the circle. The Stamford, Texas, product retired 14 of the 15 first batters she faced, including retiring 10-consecutive batters to begin the game. Gutierrez did not give up a base hit until there were two outs in the top of the fifth. Gutierrez surrendered two earned runs on four hits while striking out four batters. Junior RHP Teagan Kavan threw 2.1 innings of relief. Kavan did not give up a base hit and totaled four punchouts while working around a walk.
Texas added its first run in the second inning when freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols connected on an RBI single down the left field line to score senior second baseman Leighann Goode and make it 1-0 Texas.
Texas went ahead 2-0 in the third off the bat of senior catcher Reese Atwood, who smashed a two-out RBI single through the left side to score senior first baseman Katie Stewart.
Freshman designated player Hannah Wells launched a leadoff solo home run in the third to put the Horns ahead, 3-0. It was her 11th home run of the season.
Gutierrez held Arkansas scoreless until the Razorbacks scored four runs (two unearned) with two outs in the fifth. Back-to-back RBI singles allowed Arkansas to trim Texas' lead to 3-2. Then, back-to-back Texas errors (one fielding, one throwing) allowed two more runs to come in and give Arkansas a 4-3 lead.
Texas had runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings but came up empty.
The Longhorns outhit the Razorbacks at a 5-4 clip. Wells led Texas with her 2-for-3 performance that included a solo home run. Atwood and Nichols both finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a walk.
