Baseball inks Florida State transfer

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas baseball squad added Florida State University transfer Casey Whitmer to the roster for the 2008 season late Tuesday.
Whitmer, a 6-foot, 1-inch, 188-pound right-hander, pitched in 12 games for Florida State as a freshman in 2007. He logged a 1-0 record with a 4.40 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.
The Kilgore, Texas, native is having a solid season in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL). He owns a 2-1 record with a 1.33 ERA and one save for the Brazos Valley Bombers. Whitmer has 50 strikeouts and opponents are hitting just .136 over 40.2 innings. He was named D-Bat TCL Pitcher of the Week once this season and was the starting pitcher for the Tris Speaker Division at the TCL All-Star Game.
Whitmer was a standout at Kilgore High School, posting an 11-2 record with a 1.20 ERA. He was named third-team All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and District 17-4A MVP by district coaches as a senior. He was selected in the 35th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
With the signing of Whitmer, Texas has 17 players inked to join the squad for next spring. Seven of the Longhorns' signees were drafted in last June¹s draft and have until Aug. 15 to decide whether to sign a contract or play collegiately. Drafted signees include Brandon Workman (3rd round Philadelphia Phillies), Taylor Grote (8th round New York Yankees), Brandon Belt (11th round Atlanta Braves), Runey Davis (11th round Pittsburgh Pirates), Kevin Keyes (26th round Texas Rangers) and Garrett Clyde (43rd round Chicago Cubs) and Cameron Rupp (43rd round - Pittsburgh Pirates).
