Rookie right-handed pitcher collects second career weekly league distinction
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns standout Sam Cozart was selected as the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound right-hander shared the prestigious honor with Auburn's Mason McCraine. Cozart also earned weekly conference distinction on March 9.
The High Point, N.C., native secured a pair of saves in the Longhorns' series win over No. 11 Alabama. Cozart retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced across four hitless frames, striking out eight.
In the series opener, the rookie set down the final nine hitters in an efficient 39-pitch effort.
The next day, Cozart punched out the side in the ninth to seal a 3-1 victory. His final strikeout bumped the Longhorns' total to 19 on the afternoon, matching their most in a nine-inning game in program history.
Cozart is one of five Texas players to have collected SEC weekly accolades in 2026, alongside Dylan Volantis (Feb. 16), Temo Becerra (March 3), Ruger Riojas (March 30) and Anthony Pack Jr. (April 6).
The fourth-ranked Longhorns conclude their five-game homestand against Air Force on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
