Belt named TCL Player of the Week

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Baseball newcomer Brandon Belt was tabbed the Texas Collegiate League (TCL) Player of the Week on Monday. Belt was recognized for his outstanding week with the Coppell Copperheads.
Belt hit .583 (14-of-24) with three home runs, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored on the week to help guide Coppell into the postseason. He went 5-of-6 with a home run and two RBI in a doubleheader against the Mineral Wells Steam. Belt is batting .333 with seven doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI on the season.
The 6-foot, 5-inch, 190-pound left-hander originally signed a letter of intent for the 2007 season but opted to play at San Jacinto College. Last season, Belt helped lead the Gators to the JuCo World Series with a 7-2 record, 2.82 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 51 innings on the mound and a .421 batting average with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 57 RBI at the plate.
Belt was drafted in the 11th round in back-to-back Major League Baseball First-Year Player Drafts, including by the Boston Red Sox in 2006 and Atlanta Braves in 2007.
Heading into the 2006 early signing period, Belt was ranked No. 3 on Texas Baseball News' Texas Top 25 list. He went 8-2 with a 1.45 ERA and 123 strikeouts on the mound and hit .562 with 10 home runs as a junior at Lufkin Hudson High School. As a senior, he went 10-0 with a 0.24 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 58 innings to earn All-America honors from Louisville Slugger and Baseball America.
