Corovic captures Rice Tennis Classic

HOUSTON -- Texas sophomore Vanja Corovic scored a straight-set victory over Rice's Julie Chao to win the main singles draw Sunday at the 27th annual Rice Tennis Classic at the Owls' Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia), the 2006 Big 12 Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, tallied a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rice's Chao to claim the 16-player main singles draw. Corovic also teamed with junior Marija Milic to capture the 16-team main doubles draw.
Corovic and Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) registered an 8-6 win over Texas-Arlington's Klara Jagosova and Monika Hadvigerova to win the doubles title.
In other action, UT senior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) defeated UT sophomore Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) in three sets to take third place in the main singles draw.
Freshman Caroline Larsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) added a consolation victory in the "B" singles draw, and freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.) added a consolation win over UT sophomore Sarah Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas).
Freshman Abby Liu (Houston, Texas) scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over Texas-San Antonio's Eva Silvestor to win the consolation round in the "D" singles bracket.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 for the pre-qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles.
