Softball upends Alvin Community College, 9-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Softball team received a pair of two-hit performances by senior infielder Desiree Williams and Kelly Melone as it knocked off Alvin Community College, 9-1 in fall exhibition play. The victory improved the Longhorns' fall record to 3-0.
The Horns broke open a tight game in the fifth when an RBI single by junior outfielder Brittany Chalk scored Melone. Williams' RBI triple in the sixth plated freshman shortstop Alexis Bennett and freshman Courtney Craig's RBI double in the seventh scored junior Tallie Thrasher. A double by Melone scored sophomore outfielder Shelby Savony later in the frame and an RBI single by senior infielder Crystal Saenz pushed Melone across to finish the seventh.
In the eighth, senior catcher/outfielder Kacie Gaskin notched an early triple and an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Raygan Feight scored Gaskin. A sacrifice fly by Bennett scored Feight and an RBI double by junior infielder Loryn Johnson scored junior outfielder Kori Cook. The Horns capped their scoring at nine with an RBI single by Williams that scored Johnson.
Texas' entire pitching staff saw action in the game with junior Torrey Schroeder starting and throwing two innings, before giving way to Williams who tossed one and junior Erin Tresselt who threw the fourth and fifth. Craig followed Tresselt with one inning of work and sophomore Brittany Barnhill tossed the final two frames.
The Horns return to action Wednesday, Nov. 5 when it plays host to Odessa College. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
