No. 20 Women's Tennis routs Kansas State, 6-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 20 Texas gave up the doubles point but responded with six victories in the singles session, as the Longhorns improved to 8-0 in conference play with a 6-1 win over Kansas State (6-12, 2-7 Big 12) Sunday at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
"We came out sluggish in the doubles matches, but I was pleased with how we responded in the singles matches," UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. "K-State didn't give us anything, and it took a lot of work to come back and get this win."
Texas (14-4) opened the match by surrendering the doubles point for the first time in six matches. Freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and senior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) opened with an 8-5 win at the second slot over Vanessa Cottin and Antea Huljev, but the Wildcats seized the doubles point with victories at the first and third positions.
Texas quickly eliminated its 1-0 deficit by sweeping all six singles matches. Freshman Caroline Larsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) put UT on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vanessa Cottin at fourth singles, and Texas took the lead at third singles, where sophomore Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) defeated Katerina Kudlackova by a 6-2, 6-2 count.
Zauft pushed the Texas lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Huljev at second singles, and the Longhorns clinched the match at fifth singles when sophomore Sarah Lancaster knocked off Cottin, 6-1, 6-1.
Mello hung on for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win at sixth singles over Pauline Guemas, extending the Texas lead to 5-1, and sophomore Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at first singles over Viviana Yrureta to close out the match.
Texas resumes competition on Wednesday, April 16 when it visits Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center.
