WACO, Texas -- Texas freshman Aeriel Ellis capped a dominant run through the main singles draw with a straight-set win over Baylor's Nina Secerbegovic in the championship match Tuesday at the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
Ellis topped Secerbegovic by a 6-1, 6-3 count to capture the tournament's main singles draw and secure a berth in next month's ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New Haven, Conn. Ellis boasts a 14-2 singles record in just her first month of collegiate tennis.
"Aeriel was ready to play, and she was on her game from start to finish," UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. "She showed why she is the tournament champion. She was so focused and disciplined out there. It was exciting to watch, and I can't be happier for her.
In other action, junior Abby Liu and sophomore Carlene Leyden posted an 8-4 win over SMU's Nicole Briceno and Shahazoda Hatamova in the finals of the consolation doubles draw.
"Those two were outstanding today," Fendick-McCain said. "They played great, and they were so on cue together and gave their opponents a hard time everywhere on the court."
