COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The No. 7 University of Texas women's track and field team took first at the Texas A&M Invitational to win its first team title of the indoor season. The Longhorns posted one NCAA automatic mark and four provisional standards Saturday afternoon in their last meet before the Big 12 Championship.
Texas finished with 110.50 points, ahead of No. 1 Texas A&M (87 points), No. 25 Baylor (79), No. 24 Miami (57.50), Rice (55) and No. 9 Arizona State (50).
Senior All-American Alexandria Anderson posted a pair of NCAA provisional marks and top-three finishes as she clocked a 7.34 in the 60-meter dash for second and a season-best 23.42 in the 200-meter dash for third.
The Longhorns earned points in the 400-meter dash from freshmen Stacey-Ann Smith and Judith Nwosu who crossed the line fourth (54.45) and fifth (54.76), respectively. Both newcomers also shaved over two seconds off their previous season-bests.
Junior high jumper Destinee Hooker took first in the event and earned her second NCAA automatic mark of the season after clearing 6-1.25 (1.89m). The height ties the second-best jump in the nation, only behind her mark of 6-3.25 (1.91m) that she reached at the Leonard Hilton Memorial (Jan. 16). Hooker's mark also broke the Gilliam Indoor record she set at the Big 12 vs. SEC meet (Jan. 31).
Freshman Victoria Lucas also scored in the event as she cleared 5-5.75 (1.67m) for fifth place.
The freshman-filled 4x400 meter relay squad of LaKeidra Stewart, Angele Cooper, Smith and Nwosu took third after clocking a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 3:38.49. The group entered the event as the Gilliam Indoor Stadium record holders but relinquished the record to the Aggies who clocked a 3:37.35 for first place.
Sophomore Chantel Malone posted an NCAA provisional and season-best mark of 41-10.50 (12.76m) to finish third in the triple jump.
Texas earned a pair of eighth-place finishes from junior Lauren Salisbury and senior Katara Rosby. Salisbury clocked a 5:07.00 in the mile while Rosby posted a 2:11.48 in the 800-meter run.
In the 3,000 meter run, the Longhorns placed two harriers in the top eight. Senior Larkin Geyer finished third in a career-best mark of 9:44.74 while freshman Mia Behm crossed the line in 9:48.35.
In the field events, junior Jordyn Brown placed sixth in the weight throw (55-10.50, 17.06m) while freshman Amanda Van Dyke tossed a season-best 46-10.25 (14.28) to finish 16th.
Freshman LaKeidra Stewart ran her second-fastest 60-meter time of the season, 7.51, to finish 11th while freshman Alexandria Pegram posted a 7.68 for 16th.
Stewart also ran a season-best time of 24.14 in the 200 for 12th. Pegram clocked a 24.62 for 19th.
The Longhorns have next week off in preparation for the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Championship, which will be held Feb. 27-28 at Gilliam Indoor on the campus of Texas A&M.
POST MEET QUOTES
HEAD COACH Beverly Kearney On the performance of the sprinters: We have a very young sprint group, with the exception of Alex Anderson, they are all freshman. We are not exactly where we want to be but we keep improving and learning each meet. The more we race, the better we get and I'm happy with that.
On the whole team contributing: That is the point of what we have been trying to focus on is being a team this year. We know we don't have the individual power to carry the team but our chance of winning is going to depend on how focused everyone is on contributing to the team and trying to score.
On the Big 12 Championship: The Big 12 Championship is still going to be a challenge. We feel like we have a shot at winning it but everyone is going to have to hit at every cylinder. Just take 75 percent of the team you take in is freshman and go from there. You never know what you're going to get.
