Baseball wins first game of doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns scored in each of the first six innings and received a stellar pitching performance from freshman Taylor Jungmann to earn a 10-1 win over the UIC Flames in the first game of a collegiate baseball doubleheader at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Longhorns pounced on the Flames early with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Texas loaded the bases with a Travis Tucker walk, a bunt single by Brandon Loy and a Brandon Belt single to leftfield. Cameron Rupp single to the gap in right centerfield to plate Tucker and Loy and a throwing error on the play allowed Belt to score. Tant Shepherd capped the rally with a double down the leftfield line to set up a two-run single by Kevin Keyes.
Texas (2-0) tacked on a run in the bottom of the second. Tucker reached on a sun and wind aided double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Loy. Belt drew a walk to put runners at the corners and Rupp plated Tucker with a sacrifice fly to stake the Longhorns to a 6-0 lead.
The Longhorns inflated the cushion to 7-0 with a run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Preston Clark walked and was replaced at first on a fielder's choice groundout by David Hernandez. Hernandez stole second base and was pushed across on a single by Connor Rowe.
UIC (0-2) broke the scoring seal in the top of the fourth. Tony Altavilla drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on a double to rightfield by Jason Ganek.
The Horns added two runs in the home half of the fourth with an RBI Kevin Keyes, driving in Belt, and a throwing error on a grounder by Hernandez allowed Shepherd to score.
Texas manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth. Tucker reached second on a throwing error by the UIC shortstop. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Loy.
Jungmann (1-0) earned the victory in his first career start. The freshman right-hander allowed just one run on one hit and four walks while striking out four over 6.0 innings. Freshman southpaw Andrew McKirahan closed out the win with a hitless ninth, fanning one.
Brad Riegler (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Flames. He allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits and five walks over 4.2 innings.
Keyes led the Horns' offensive assault, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Rupp went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Tucker scored three runs and Belt and Shepherd each touched the dish twice.
