AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Softball team notched a pair of one-run victories on opening day, knocking off Florida State, 3-2 and downing Stephen F. Texas' win over FSU in game one extended the Horns' season-opening winning streak to a perfect 13-0, winning every opener since the program's inception.
Texas (2-0) used a stellar pitching performance by junior hurler Torrey Schroeder in the nightcap against SFA. The righthander tossed a complete game shutout and lasted. 5.1 innings before surrendering a hit. She notched a career-best 11 strikeouts, allowed one hit and faced only one batter over the minimum.
Junior righthander Erin Tresselt earned the start for the Horns against the Seminoles, tossing 5.0 innings, scattering two hits and allowing one run before giving way to sophomore Brittany Barnhill who earned the win after tossing the final two frames.
In game one, Texas got on the scoreboard in the third when senior outfielder Crystal Saenz led off the inning with a double down the rightfield line. An RBI double by freshman shortstop Alexis Bennett scored Saenz and gave UT an early 1-0 lead.
The Horns added to their lead in the sixth when junior second baseman Loryn Johnson doubled to left and came home on freshman third baseman Nadia Taylor's two-run homer to left centerfield. Taylor's homer in her first collegiate game put the Horns up 3-1.
Texas scored early in game two and held tight to its lead for the duration. Senior first baseman Desiree Williams reached on a fielder's choice in the third and took advantage of a relaxed SFA defense, immediately stealing two bases after reaching on the fielder's choice. Senior outfielder Kacie Gaskin followed with an RBI single to leftfield, bringing Williams home for the lone run of the game.
Bennett and Saenz headlined the Longhorns' offense on the day, tallying two hits each, while Saenz registered a double and a triple for two of her hits.
Texas returns to action when it takes on Iowa at 1:30 p.m. Central on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. Pending the game's result, UT will play in the 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. semifinal.
