EL PASO, Texas -- The Texas Softball team broke or tied five single-game school records in its 13-4 run-rule victory over UTEP, Sunday afternoon. The Longhorns' victory completed the three-game sweep of the Miners and improved UT to 14-4 on the year, while UTEP fell to 11-9.
Junior second baseman Loryn Johnson broke her own school record with seven RBI in the victory and tied the school record for hits (4) and total bases (10) in a single game. Senior first baseman Desiree Williams' four runs scored against UTEP broke the previous UT record shared by 12 players. Freshman rightfielder Courtney Craig's four stolen bases set a new single-game record, besting the old mark that five former Longhorns shared.
Junior hurler Torrey Schroeder (6-1) tossed a complete game three-hitter for the Longhorns to earn the win, allowing four runs and fanning three in 6.0 innings of work. UTEP reliever Chelsea Mayer (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs and walking four in 1.2 innings of work.
Texas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, using a leadoff double to right centerfield by Williams to start the rally. Williams came home when Johnson launched a two-run home run down the leftfield line.
The Miners answered quickly putting together a single, a UT error and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. UTEP rightfielder Ashley Ellis delivered with the sacks packed, connecting for a grand slam that put the Miners ahead, 4-2.
The Longhorns evened the tally at four in the second, tallying four hits, including a pair of back-to-back bases-loaded RBI singles by sophomore catcher Amy Hooks and Johnson.
Texas tacked on four more runs in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate, notching three hits and taking advantage of two UTEP errors. Craig reached on an error with two outs to start the rally and after stealing second she advanced on a passed ball on a walk and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. An RBI single by Williams plated the next run and a two-run double by Johnson moved the UT edge to 8-4.
The Horns sent 11 hitters to the plate in the sixth, registering five runs on six hits to take a 13-4 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Williams and freshman shortstop Raygan Feight pushed the first two runs across before a two-run double by Johnson plated two more runs. Sophomore pinch hitter Brittany Barnhill reached on a fielder's choice and notched an RBI to tally the final run of the frame.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday, March 3 when it travels to San Marcos, Texas to take on Texas State. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
