SORRENTO, Fla. -- University of Texas senior Kelley Louth fired a season-low 3-under-par 69 in the opening round of the UCF Challenge to finish the day tied for fifth place. As a team, the Longhorns are tied for seventh in the 18-team field at 3-over 291.
Beginning her round on the 10th hole of the RedTail Golf Club, Louth found two of her five birdie opportunities on the 11th and 17th holes to make the turn at 2-under. She bogeyed the par-5, 505-yard second hole for her first blemish, but then carded three more birdies on holes four, six and seven to drop to 4-under. An ensuing bogey on the eighth hole put Louth back at 3-under for the day, just three strokes shy of tournament leader Jessica Ladloczky (66, -6) of Florida.
Senior Caney Hines finished her round just one stroke shy of her season-best with a 73 to tie for 32nd, while senior Kristin Walla rounded out the senior class in a tie for 40th at 2-over 74. Junior Shannon Fish and freshman Nicole Vandermade are tied for 53rd place at 3-over 75.
UCLA holds the lead in the team standings at 6-under 282. Arizona State (284, -4) trails its Pac-10 rival by two strokes, while Oklahoma State and LSU are tied for third place at 2-under 286.
