STILLWATER, Okla. -- The No. 9 Texas Longhorns used 13 hits, all singles, to register an 8-5 win over the No. 17 Oklahoma State Cowboys in Big 12 Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Texas (20-8, 6-6 Big 12) pounced on the Cowboys early with a run in the top of the first. Travis Tucker reached on a wind-aided single to lead-off the inning. With one out, he moved to third on a throwing error by OSU third baseman Randy McCurry and scored on a single through the right side by Cameron Rupp.
Oklahoma (21-10, 4-5 Big 12) State responded three-fold in the bottom half of the first. Michael Dabbs started the inning with a solo blast to right field and two batters later Neil Medchill hit a two-run home run in the same location to stake the Cowboys to a 3-1 lead.
The Longhorns reclaimed the lead with four runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, Kevin Keyes singled up the middle and was replaced at first base by David Hernandez on a fielder's choice groundout. Michael Torres singled to leftfield to put runners at the corners and Connor Rowe delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield to trim the lead to 3-2. The runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch and Torres induced a run-scoring balk when an illegal move was used to throw him out stealing home to knot the game at 3-3. Tucker and Brandon Loy added RBI singles to give Texas a 5-3 advantage.
The Cowboys shaved the UT lead to 5-4 with another lead-off home run to rightfield by Dabbs.
The Texas advantage ballooned to 8-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh. The frame was highlighted by a two-run, pinch-hit single by Russell Moldenhauer.
Texas starter Cole Green allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. Andrew McKirahan offered 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. Austin Wood (5-0) earned the win in relief. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out seven over 4.1 innings. Wood fanned the last six batters he faced.
Tyler Lyons (4-3) allowed eight runs, four earned, on 11 hits and two walks while striking out three over 6.2 innings and was saddled with the loss.
Tucker went 3-for-5 to lead the UT offense. Loy and Keyes each added two hits.
Texas returns to action Tuesday when the Longhorns host the No. 22 TCU Horned Frogs in a 6 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
