Longhorns plate 13 unanswered runs in largest come-from-behind victory of season
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 4 Texas overcame a pair of five-run deficits, rallying for a 14-7 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
With the result, the Longhorns (28-7) posted their largest come-from-behind win of the year.
Texas faced both a 5-0 first-inning hole and trailed, 6-1, two innings later before scoring 13 unanswered tallies against the Islanders (16-20).
Carson Tinney led the charge, compiling a career-high five RBI. Tinney plated at least one run in four consecutive innings, sparking the offensive explosion with a solo shot in the third. The junior's 416-foot jack marked his sixth homer in as many games.
One frame later, Tinney rocketed an RBI double to right-center field, as part of the four-run fourth. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound backstop capped off a three-spot in the fifth, delivering a run-scoring ground out. He punctuated his standout effort by driving in a pair in the four-run sixth.
Tinney was one of four Longhorns to record a multi-RBI performance, with Josh Livingston, Dariyan Pendergrass and Anthony Pack Jr. rounding out the quartet.
Livingston reached safely in four straight plate appearances, pushing across tallies three innings in a row. The graduate student finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, drawing a go-ahead bases-loaded free pass in the fifth.
In each of those three frames, Pendergrass followed Livingston by chasing home runs of his own. Earning his first start on The Forty Acres, Pendergrass notched his first hit in burnt orange and totaled three RBI. He registered a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to pull Texas within, 6-4. The redshirt senior also mounted an RBI single in the fifth before laying down a safety squeeze one frame later.
Meanwhile, Pack Jr. added two runs on a first-inning sacrifice fly and a game-tying RBI in the fourth.
All nine starters logged a base knock, as the Longhorns amassed 16 hits and worked 11 walks.
In the victory, Texas stole seven bases, which marked the most in a game since the Longhorns swiped eight bags against Prairie View A&M on April 28, 2015.
Right-hander Hudson Hamilton (2-0) picked up the win in relief. Hamilton matched a career-best four strikeouts over a season-long 3 1/3 scoreless. The junior was one of seven Texas hurlers to make an appearance.
Overall, the Longhorns' bullpen yielded three runs over nine innings of work. Texas' relievers racked up 10 strikeouts and issued just one free pass.
Up next, the Longhorns welcome No. 11 Alabama to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The three-game set is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
