LOS ANGELES -- Texas-Ex Garrett Weber-Gale and fellow Beijing Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak received the award for "Best Moment" at the 2009 ESPY Awards held Wednesday, July 15 at the Nokia Theatre.
Weber-Gale and his Beijing Olympics teammates received the award by way of an online fan vote at ESPN.com for their come-from-behind victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The American relay trailed the powerful French relay by a wide margin going into the final 50 meters, but a formidable charge from Lezak in the final 25 meters gave the gold to Team USA in one of the most thrilling swimming finishes at the Beijing Olympics.
Lezak's triumphant finish helped give Weber-Gale his first Olympic gold medal and enabled Phelps to continue his pursuit of a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. Weber-Gale also won a gold medal with Texas-Exes Ian Crocker and Brendan Hansen in the 400m medley relay at the Beijing Olympics.
