Berens, Weber-Gale help USA to gold at FINA World Championships

ROME -- University of Texas rising senior Ricky Berens and Texas-Ex Garrett Weber-Gale helped the Team USA 400-meter freestyle relay qualify for the finals Sunday at the 2009 FINA World Championships, and the Americans went on to win the event later in the evening.
In Sunday's preliminary round, Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) finished the relay's third leg in 48.19 seconds, and Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) led off the relay in 48.30. The relay qualified fourth in the preliminary round at 3:11.64.
In Sunday's finals, the American relay of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian was victorious in 3:09.21. Russia took the silver in 3:09.52, and France won the bronze in 3:09.89.
UT rising senior Dave Walters will compete in Monday's 200m freestyle preliminary round. Texas-Ex Aaron Peirsol, the world record holder in the 100m and 200m backstroke events, will compete in the 100m backstroke preliminaries on Monday.
