AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Washington State Friday night out at Mike A. Myers Field. The Cougars used three first half goals to win their first game against UT in program history. Texas moves to 3-4-0 on the season while WSU is now 5-2-0.
In the first half, WSU's Kiersten Dallstream picked up the first of her two assists in the match when she sent a low cross into the center of the field that forced UT keeper Alexa Gaul to dive for the save. The ball then slipped out of Gaul's hands and Brandi Vega was able to collect the rebound and fire it into the back of the net in the 17th minute.
Ten minutes later Elysse Vane Leer added to the Cougars lead when she connected on a pass from Maggie Dougher for the goal. WSU continued its offensive attack in the 38th minute when Dallstream slipped a ball through the UT defense to Emma Stolz who fired from about 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net for the 3-0 lead.
The Cougars extended their lead in the 71st minute when Jacquelyn Roth connected on a rebounded shot off of a corner kick. Roth, who was about 18 yards out on the right side of the box, curved the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
Sophomore Courtney Goodson led the Horns with three shots while junior Alisha Ortiz posted two shots on goal.
The Longhorns return to the pitch at 1 p.m. Central on Sunday, Sept. 20 when they face the New Mexico Lobos. Fans who attend UT's home football game against Texas Tech Saturday night, can use their ticket stub to get into Sunday's match for free.
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the game overall: I thought we started the game pretty well, had a couple of chances early on, gave up a little bit of a soft goal, and then we sort of panicked from there. Next thing you know we were down 3-0. But we will learn from it, and we will move on.
On Washington State's offense: They did a great job keeping forward, and worked really well on offense. They honestly, just played very well.
On what to expect during New Mexico matchup: It's going to be hard. They are a good team, and undefeated at this point. We've got to get the group we have on the field back together. And we are going to have to step up our game very quickly.
